After a 250 kms road trip towards the North Pole, crossing the Arctic circle, checked in at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Saariselka,as a first step in my hunt for “Aurora Borealis” in the Finnish Lapland.
Aurora Borealis commonly known as the “Northern Lights”, sighted in the Polar region is a nature’s phenomenon.
I have read many articles about this visual treat even from my childhood days. This was one reason that pushed me to visit the Arctic at the onset of autumn,an appropriate time for these happenings.
The Resort Manager had suggested the hypothetical time and a place with a watchtower, away from the small town,to watch the mindblowing event. The adrenal glands were doing overtime. The anxiety of the suspense in store was visible in all of us.Every second minute, one of us would barge out from the room braving the chilly wind to look up at the sky.In the process,we saw thousands of stars-an impossibility for us-the city dwellers. As was our waiting,so was the game of Pogo-it went on and on………
The much awaited time came! In one of the surveillance(!!),we could sense a difference in the skyline.Thereafter,we did not waste a minute.Immediately we set across to the suggested hillock in Kaunispaa – a 20 minute drive from the Resort,at around midnight in the sub-zero temperature, gazing at the northern sky all the time. There is no time schedule as to when this would occur. It is a combination of a clear sky in the night, right equation of electrically charged particles of Sun hitting earth’s atmosphere, and above all, HIS grace.
Tens of pairs of eyes peered on to the sky, for the mystic happening.
And Lo !! It showed up – The horizon got brighter and brighter and streaks of celestial green lights appeared intermittently. All these unbelievable glory moments were captured in our DSLR.
It lasted for around quarter of an hour. All along, I stood as a frozen pine tree watching the “Nature’s lazer show”.
Till I lace up for the next,
J.Ram
